Why All Right?

All Right? is a health-promoting social marketing campaign based in Ōtautahi, Christchurch. Since its launch in 2013, All Right? has become a powerful champion for wellbeing in Canterbury, helping normalise conversations around wellbeing and mental health.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini ke: my strength does not come from me alone, but also from others.

Canterbury History

All Right? was launched in February 2013 to support the psychosocial recovery of Cantabrians following the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.

The Greater Christchurch Psychosocial Committee mandated the development of All Right? after the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor wrote a briefing paper on the likely psychosocial effects of the earthquakes and how to mitigate these.

Recovery literature suggests there are 4 stages people go through after a disaster: the Heroic Phase, Honeymoon Phase, Disillusionment Phase and Reconstruction Phase.

All Right? was launched in the disillusionment phase, when people often realise how long the recovery is going to take and start to feel frustrated, tired, overwhelmed, and a sense of grief. Since then, the campaign has become a trusted brand in the community.

Our Impact

All Right? is making a real difference, with evaluations showing it's helped people become more aware of their wellbeing and how to improve it.

The campaign's latest evaluation found that 77% of respondents said All Right? messages make them more aware of looking after their wellbeing, and 47% have done things as a result of what they have seen or heard.

How We Work

Key to the campaign's success is a comprehensive research programme that captures the authentic experiences of Cantabrians, the use of a conversational tone, and not telling people how to feel or what to do.

We undertake regular, in-depth research into how communities are doing. This gives us a wealth of knowledge about the hurdles people are facing, how they are feeling, and the sorts of things that can help.
